Tesla Inc. began delivering its highly-anticipated Cybertruck to customers in the United States on November 30, 2023. Since then, the company has achieved significant milestones in the production and delivery of its futuristic electric vehicle.
Deliveries Through the Year
- According to data from Kelley Blue Book, Tesla sold 16,692 Cybertrucks in the third quarter in the US, surpassing EV trucks from competitors like the Ford F-150 Lightning and Rivian R1T.
- From the start of the year to the end of September, Tesla delivered 28,250 Cybertrucks, outselling its luxury vehicle offerings, including the Model S and Model X.
- Additionally, the company started delivering the vehicle to customers in Mexico and Canada, while achieving a positive gross margin in the third quarter.
Cybertruck Pricing
- The Cybertruck is currently available in two variants: the lower-priced all-wheel drive variant starting at $79,990 and the higher-priced Cyberbeas variant at $99,990.
- However, during its unveiling in November 2019, Tesla announced plans for three variants: the entry-level single-motor, rear-wheel-drive (RWD) version starting at $39,900, the dual motor all-wheel drive variant at $49,900, and the top-tier tri-motor all-wheel drive at $69,900.
Upward but Below Expectations
- Despite a growth in deliveries, the Cybertruck’s production falls short of Elon Musk’s expectations. Musk aims to produce 250,000 Cybertrucks in 2025, but the company’s current production capacity is only about 125,000 units per year.
- Tesla does not disclose model-wise delivery and production numbers, but the company’s engineer, Wes Morrill, has confirmed that a cheaper variant of the Cybertruck is not canceled and may be available later.
A Year of Progress and Challenges
While the Cybertruck has made significant strides in its first year of deliveries, it still faces production constraints and challenges in meeting demand. As the electric vehicle market continues to evolve, Tesla will need to address these challenges to meet its ambitious production goals.
