Tesla’s head of design, Franz von Holzhausen, recently shed light on the inspiration behind the company’s newly unveiled Cybercab concept. This futuristic two-seater robotaxi boasts a striking gold exterior, echoing the iconic yellow of New York City’s famous taxis.
The Vision Behind the Design
Holzhausen explained the thought process behind the bold color choice in a video shared by the Petersen Automotive Museum, where the Cybercab will be on display until early January 2025.
“We chose the color gold and it’s really a special color. It really reflects kind of a future version of the idea of a New York City Yellow Cab… we’ve taken that iconic yellow and created something more expressive and more up to-date. The gold is just – it feels right,” Holzhausen said.
A Sneak Peek at Tesla’s Future Plans
The Cybercab, along with the Robovan, were unveiled at an event in October, showcasing Tesla’s vision for the future of transportation. Both vehicles are designed for autonomous driving, eliminating the need for pedals or steering wheels.
Attendees at the event had the opportunity to experience autonomous driving firsthand, navigating around the studio in a fleet of 19 Cybercabs and 29 autonomously operating Model Ys.
Key Takeaways
- The Cybercab is priced at under $30,000
- It uses inductive charging, eliminating the need for a charging plug
- Production is slated to begin before 2027
