Tesla Inc.’s Head of Design, Franz von Holzhausen, recently explained the inspiration behind the gold paint on the company’s newly debuted 2-seater robotaxi model, the Cybercab. According to Holzhausen, the choice of gold paint is an attempt to create a futuristic version of the iconic New York City yellow cab.
The Inspiration Behind the Gold Paint
In a video shared by the Petersen Automotive Museum, Holzhausen shared his thoughts on the choice of color:
“We chose the color gold and it’s really a special color. It really reflects kind of a future version of the idea of a New York City Yellow Cab… we’ve taken that iconic yellow and created something more expressive and more up to-date. The gold is just – it feels right.”
The Cybercab on Display
The Cybercab is currently on display at the Petersen Automotive Museum until early January 2025. This particular model is one of the few pre-production Cybercabs showcased by Tesla at its event on October 10 at Warner Bros. Discovery Inc.’s movie studio near Los Angeles.
The Future of Autonomous Transportation
The Cybercab is designed for autonomous driving, featuring butterfly wings that open upwards, and is priced under $30,000. The vehicle will use inductive charging instead of a charging plug and is expected to enter production before 2027. CEO Elon Musk announced that the Cybercab would be part of the company’s autonomous driving fleet, allowing guests to experience self-driving technology around the studio in a fleet of 19 Cybercabs and 29 autonomously operating Model Ys.
