Tesla Provides Complimentary Supercharging for Model 3 and Y in Japan Following Elon Musk's Concerns Over Limited Market Presence

Tesla Inc. is now offering complimentary supercharging for customers in Japan who purchase a Model 3 or Model Y vehicle. This move aims to expand the company’s market share in the country, where it has been struggling to gain traction.

What’s Changing

Customers in Japan who buy a Model 3 sedan after January 1 will receive free supercharging for five years, provided they take delivery of their vehicle by March 31. A similar offer applies to new Model Ys in the company’s inventory.

Pricing and Models

The Model 3 starts at 5,313,000 yen ($34,055) in Japan, while the Model Y starts at 5,950,000 yen ($38,138).

Elon Musk’s Concerns

In January 2024, Tesla CEO Elon Musk expressed concerns over the company’s limited market presence in Japan, describing it as “remarkably low.” Musk stated that Tesla would focus on deploying superchargers and setting up service centers in strategic locations, rather than overspending on advertising.

Expanding Infrastructure

In October, Tesla opened its 600th supercharger post in Japan, marking a significant step in building EV charging infrastructure in the country. Musk emphasized the importance of establishing a strong presence in Japan, the third-largest car market in the world, and increasing awareness of the Tesla brand.

Market Share Goals

Musk aims to achieve a market share in Japan comparable to other non-Japanese carmakers like Mercedes or BMW. To achieve this, the company is investing in targeted initiatives, including the free supercharging offer, to attract new customers and expand its reach in the country.
