The cost of deploying a Tesla supercharger stall in the U.S. is estimated to be between $40,000 to $45,000. This is roughly the price of the company’s Model 3 base version.
What Happened
The current cost for deploying a stall is between $40,000 to $45,000. However, Tesla expects to deploy the new version of its supercharger, called V4 with V4 cabinet, for less than $40,000 per stall. The first V4 superchargers with V4 cabinets will be deployed in the third quarter of 2024.
Key Features of V4 Superchargers
- The V4 Cabinet supports 400V-1000V vehicle architectures
- It is capable of delivering up to 500kW for cars
Tesla’s Supercharger Expansion
In 2024, Tesla opened over 11,000 supercharger stalls, taking the total number of superchargers globally to over 65,000. Estimating that Tesla spent $45,000 on each of these stalls, the company spent $495 million on deploying superchargers in the year.
Demand for Charging Infrastructure
With Tesla adding more EVs on the road and opening the supercharging network to EV drivers from rival automakers, demand for charging infrastructure is on a steady rise. The company is working to keep up with demand and is looking to add 500-1000 supercharger stalls each month in North America alone.
Future Plans
Tesla’s Director of Charging for North America, Europe Middle East & Africa, as well as the Asia Pacific, stated that the company is aiming for first pilot sites in Q3. Despite the increased capability of up to 500kW/stall, Tesla expects to deploy the V4 superchargers for less than $40,000 per stall.
Why It Matters
The expansion of Tesla’s supercharger network is crucial for the growth of the electric vehicle market. As more EVs hit the road, the demand for charging infrastructure will continue to rise. Tesla’s efforts to increase the number of supercharger stalls will help to support this growth and make long-distance travel in EVs more practical.
