Tesla Hiring NYC Robotaxi Test Drivers for Up to $33 Per Hour

Tesla is hiring test drivers in New York City for its Robotaxi program, offering competitive pay rates of up to $33 per hour. The move aligns with CEO Elon Musk’s ambitious plans to deploy robotaxis across the US.

Job Requirements

The company has posted a job listing for a “Vehicle Operator, Autopilot” in NYC, requiring candidates to drive a vehicle on city streets for 5 to 8 hours a day. The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Driving an engineering vehicle for extended periods
  • Conducting dynamic audio and camera data collection

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for the job is between $25.25 and $30.60 per hour, with night and afternoon shifts receiving an additional 10% pay, taking the total to approximately $33 per hour. This is above the average hourly rate in NYC, which is around $23.

Expansion of Ride-Hailing Service

The news comes as Tesla expands its ride-hailing service to the San Francisco Bay Area. However, the company currently offers this service with a safety driver on board, as it does not have a permit to operate robotaxis in the state.

Challenges Facing Robotaxi

The Tesla Robotaxi is facing a possible class-action lawsuit from investors who allege that the service is dangerous, citing instances of speeding and driving in the wrong lane. Meanwhile, Elon Musk’s $56 billion pay package is scheduled to be heard in court in October.
