Tesla Inc. CEO Elon Musk has revealed that the company offered legacy automakers the opportunity to license its Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology. However, despite warnings from Musk about the advent of self-driving cars, these automakers have allegedly declined the offer.
FSD on Non-Tesla Vehicles
Musk shared his thoughts on the matter in a social media post, stating that he had attempted to warn legacy automakers about the impending shift towards autonomous vehicles. He claimed to have even offered to license Tesla’s FSD technology, but the companies “don’t want it,” which he described as “crazy.”
When legacy automakers do reach out to Tesla, Musk said they only discuss implementing FSD for small-scale programs in the distant future, with requirements that become “unworkable” and “pointless” for Tesla. Musk’s post ended with dinosaur emojis, implying that these companies risk being left behind in the autonomous driving race.
Elon Musk’s Vision for Autonomous Driving
The news comes as Musk hinted that the upcoming FSD v14.3 update could be the final piece in the puzzle for achieving unsupervised autonomous driving. The FSD v14 update has received praise from experts, who consider it a significant improvement over previous iterations.
Musk also highlighted Tesla’s efforts to build AI chips, predicting that the company will produce more chips than all its competitors combined. Tesla’s AI lead, Ahsok Elluswamy, supported Musk’s claims, emphasizing the collaboration between the company’s hardware and software teams as a key factor in chip development.
Market Performance
Tesla’s stock surged 6.82% to $417.78 at market close and rose 0.24% to $418.78 during after-hours trading.
Future of Mobility
The development of autonomous driving technology is expected to play a significant role in the future of mobility. As companies like Tesla continue to push the boundaries of innovation, the automotive industry is likely to undergo significant changes in the coming years.
