Tesla Inc. has released new safety data for its Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology, revealing that the system has driven over 8.2 billion miles to date. This achievement marks a significant milestone for the company, with over 3 billion of these miles driven in city driving conditions.
Reduced Collision Rates
The data shows that Tesla’s FSD system has caused 7 times fewer major and minor collisions, as well as 5 times fewer off-highway collisions. Additionally, the company has reported over 5.3 million miles driven before a crash in North America.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk Comments on the Achievement
Elon Musk took to social media to comment on the milestone, simply stating “Lot of miles”. This brief statement reflects the significant progress made by Tesla’s FSD technology.
Challenges and Doubts
Despite this achievement, Tesla’s FSD technology has faced challenges and doubts. The company’s Robotaxi in Austin reported 5 additional crashes in January, taking the total number of incidents to 14 since its launch in mid-2025. Investor Ross Gerber has suggested that Tesla may need to implement hardware changes to its autonomous driving stack.
Recent Incidents Raise Concerns
A recent incident involving a Tesla owner’s vehicle attempting to drive onto a boat ramp and into a lake has raised concerns about the system’s capabilities. The incident has sparked debate about the reliability of Tesla’s FSD technology.
Regulatory Developments
Tesla has avoided a 30-day suspension to manufacture and sell vehicles in California after dropping the “Autopilot” term from its marketing activities. This decision follows a lawsuit filed by the California Department of Motor Vehicles, which claimed that Tesla had misled customers about the capabilities of its Autopilot and FSD systems.
New Developments and Production
Tesla has revealed the production-ready version of its Cybercab, which will be available to customers at a price of $30,000. The company is targeting a production ramp-up for the vehicle in April.
Market Performance
Tesla’s stock has shown a favorable price trend in the long term, with the company scoring well on the Momentum metric. The stock surged 0.17% to $411.32 at market close on Wednesday and further surged 0.10% to $411.72 during overnight trading.
