The ongoing NHTSA probe into Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) system could prove to be beneficial for the EV giant, according to investor Gene Munster.
Tesla Stands Alone in Consumer Autonomy
Munster believes that the reason Tesla is in the headlines is due to its unique position in the consumer autonomy category. He stated, “I don’t think that they’re going after Tesla per se… Tesla just stands alone in this category of consumer autonomy.” The investigation aims to recall over 2.8 million vehicles for over 60 cases of traffic violations and 14 accidents. However, Munster pointed out that the 14 accidents, when compared to the number of U.S. accidents per month, came to a ratio of 0.000028%.
Benefits of the Investigation
Munster thinks that the investigation is a good thing, as it pushes the technology forward. He applauds Tesla and Elon Musk’s willingness to make traffic safer, saying, “Good that they’re doing this, that they are pushing this technology… I think the market is increasingly going to appreciate” the company’s autonomous efforts.
Tesla’s FSD Lawsuits
The probe comes as Tesla has been faced with multiple lawsuits over the FSD system, including a class action lawsuit in California and a lawsuit filed by investors. The company also faces a lawsuit by owners in China, alleging that Tesla failed to provide the autonomous driving capabilities despite paying for them. Additionally, Tesla recently settled a case involving a Tesla vehicle on autopilot crashing into a parked SUV in Florida, resulting in the death of a woman.
Expert Opinions
Gary Black, managing director of Future Fund LLC, believes that Tesla needs a good PR staff to fight off regulatory hurdles such as the NHTSA probe. Jonathan Morrison, President Donald Trump’s pick to lead NHTSA, has called for tougher oversight on autonomous driving companies in the U.S.
Conclusion
The NHTSA investigation into Tesla’s FSD system may seem like a negative development, but it could ultimately prove to be beneficial for the company. As the market continues to appreciate Tesla’s autonomous efforts, the company’s unique position in the consumer autonomy category is likely to remain a key factor in its success.
