SpaceX IPO May Siphon Funds and Musk's Focus Away from Tesla

The upcoming initial public offering (IPO) of SpaceX, led by Elon Musk, may pose a problem for Tesla investors and shareholders. As the market prepares for the June IPO date, experts warn that the listing could divert investors’ attention and funds away from Tesla.

Musk’s Divided Attention

The IPO may also shift Musk’s focus away from Tesla, potentially affecting the electric vehicle giant’s performance. According to Joe Gilbert, a portfolio manager at Integrity Asset Management, “This cannot be a positive for Tesla.” Gilbert believes that SpaceX will become Musk’s “new baby” at Tesla’s expense, despite Musk’s proven ability to manage multiple businesses simultaneously.

Astronomical Valuation

Gilbert expects SpaceX to have an “astronomical valuation,” which could attract investors seeking to tap into the “Muskonomy” – a term describing the collective businesses led by Musk, including Tesla, SpaceX, Neuralink, and The Boring Co. This alternative investment opportunity may draw capital away from Tesla, potentially impacting the company’s shares.

Potential Consequences for Tesla

The IPO’s effects on Tesla shares may not be immediate, according to Nicholas Colas, co-founder of DataTrek Research. However, Colas suggests that a merger between Tesla and SpaceX could be beneficial, allowing investors to consolidate their investments under one roof. “If I were advising anyone, I’d be like, let’s just get all this under one roof,” Colas said. “The best approach is to have one company.”

Merger Speculation

Investor Dan Ives, managing director of Wedbush Securities and a Tesla bull, has also advocated for a merger between the two entities. Ives believes there is an 80% chance that Tesla and SpaceX will merge following SpaceX’s S-1 filings. A merger could provide a more streamlined investment opportunity for those looking to capitalize on Musk’s vision and leadership.

Impact on Investors

As the SpaceX IPO approaches, investors should be aware of the potential consequences for Tesla shares. While the effects may not be immediate, the long-term impact could be significant. As the market continues to evolve, investors will be watching closely to see how the SpaceX IPO affects the broader “Muskonomy” and the future of Tesla.
