Elon Musk is on track to become the world’s first trillionaire by the end of the year, with a potential to double his wealth to $2 trillion if he succeeds in establishing a Mars colony.
Current Projections
Musk’s current net worth is estimated to be around $733 billion. Polymarket traders are betting that he has a 94% chance of crossing the trillion-dollar mark before 2027, with $533,000 in volume on the contract. The trillion-dollar threshold may be reached on the day of the SpaceX IPO, which is valued at $1.75 trillion. Musk’s 44% stake in the company would be worth around $770 billion, combined with his 11% stake in Tesla and 304 million exercisable options, he would surpass the trillionaire mark.
The Mars Colony Bonus
SpaceX’s recent S-1 filing revealed two performance-based awards that could hand Musk over 1.3 billion shares if the company hits certain market cap and operational milestones. The combined value of these awards is estimated to be around $760 billion. The larger award is 1 billion Class B shares, which would vest when SpaceX establishes a permanent Mars colony with at least 1 million inhabitants, worth $600 billion if fully achieved. The smaller package requires SpaceX to build non-Earth-based data centers capable of delivering 100 terawatts of compute per year, worth nearly $160 billion to Musk if it vests.
Improbable Accounting Shield
SpaceX has not booked any compensation expense for these awards, as the company considers the milestones “improbable”. The S-1 filing also revealed a $4.94 billion net loss for 2025, driven by a $6.35 billion operating loss from the AI side. If even a fraction of the $760 billion package were to be added to the P&L ahead of the IPO, it would significantly impact the loss line.
Overall Potential
Musk now has roughly $1.8 trillion of equity awards on the line if his companies hit every target. With his Tesla pay deal and the potential awards from SpaceX, he has a significant opportunity to increase his wealth in the coming years. As the CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, Musk’s success is closely tied to the performance of these companies, and his potential to become the world’s first trillionaire and possibly even reach $2 trillion is an exciting prospect to watch.
