Elon Musk Warns Taxes May Erase Majority of His Fortune, Asserts He Holds Record for Highest Taxes Paid

Elon Musk, the world’s richest man and CEO of Tesla Inc., has been vocal about the taxes he pays. He has been the target of politicians discussing wealth tax on several occasions.

Elon Musk Outlines His Tax Payments

In a recent interview, Musk spoke about his tax payments, stating that for his stock options, he pays 40% income tax on a national basis. Additionally, because he spends approximately 30% of his time in California, he pays another 5%. This brings his total tax payment to about 45%.

Musk also discussed estate taxes, saying that when he dies, there will be another 45% tax, roughly half of his wealth, that will be taxed.

Musk Says He’ll End Up Only With a Quarter of His Wealth

Combining his income tax and estate taxes, Musk estimates that he will end up with only a quarter of his current wealth. He had previously stated that he paid over $10 billion in taxes in a single year, which he claims is more than anyone in history.

Newsom, Warren Target Musk

Governor Gavin Newsom (D-Calif.) has proposed a federal minimum tax on billionaires, which Musk has mocked. Newsom responded by saying that they will tax trillionaires even more. Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass) has also been vocal about taxing Musk, suggesting that if he paid her ultra-millionaire tax, it could cover free community college in America.

Tax Implications for the Wealthy

The debate about taxing the wealthy continues, with politicians like Newsom and Warren advocating for increased taxes on billionaires. Musk’s comments highlight the significant tax burden that the wealthy face, with some arguing that it could lead to a reduction in their wealth over time.
