Tesla has begun production of its Megapack 3 batteries at a new factory in Brookshire, Texas. This development is a significant milestone for the company, as its energy storage business is growing faster than its automotive sector.
Expansion of Tesla’s Global Storage Footprint
The Brookshire factory is designed to produce 50 gigawatt-hours of Megapack 3 capacity annually, expanding Tesla’s grid-battery footprint beyond its existing Megafactories in Lathrop, California, and Shanghai. Under a tax-abatement agreement, Tesla has committed $44 million for building improvements and $150 million for manufacturing equipment, with the potential to create approximately 1,500 jobs.
Timing is Everything
The start of production at the Brookshire factory comes at an opportune time, as utilities, renewable-energy developers, and data centers are seeking batteries that can store power and release it when demand rises. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, developers are expected to add 24 gigawatts of utility-scale battery storage nationwide in 2026, with 12.9 GW in Texas alone, accounting for 53% of the planned total.
Energy Deployments Outpace Vehicle Growth
Tesla’s latest results demonstrate the importance of increasing Megapack production. The company deployed a record 13.5 GWh of storage products in the second quarter, representing a 41% increase from the previous year. In contrast, vehicle deliveries rose by 25% to 480,126. Energy generation and storage revenue grew 13% to $3.14 billion, with a gross margin of 20.4%, surpassing the automotive business’s 16.9% margin.
Higher Margins Raise Megapack’s Strategic Importance
Over the first half of the year, Tesla’s energy business produced a 28.7% gross margin, compared to 18.7% for automotive operations. This disparity highlights the significance of Megapack as Tesla faces challenges such as lower vehicle pricing, shrinking regulatory-credit revenue, and substantial investments in artificial intelligence, robotaxis, and robotics.
